A trip to mark the occasion
After months of planning, most couples want a few days of doing very little, so a honeymoon often starts with rest: a beautiful room, good food and nothing in the diary. What follows is up to you.
It does not have to be the most expensive holiday you ever take. A long weekend straight after the wedding, sometimes called a mini-moon, followed by a bigger trip later in the year is an increasingly popular choice, and it can ease the pressure on both time and budget.

Getting married abroad
A wedding abroad can be simpler and more relaxed than a large wedding at home, and many hotels and resorts have wedding co-ordinators and packages that cover the ceremony, flowers and a celebration meal.
The legal side needs care. Each country has its own rules on the documents you must provide and how long you need to be there before the ceremony, and the requirements can change. GOV.UK has guidance on getting married abroad, and it is important to start the paperwork in good time. Some couples choose a legal ceremony at home and a blessing or symbolic ceremony overseas instead.
Think about your guests as well: how far they would need to travel, what it would cost them and whether the dates suit families with children.

A few practical points are worth knowing early.
- Book in good time
- Popular hotels and the best rooms are often reserved a year or more ahead, particularly for peak dates.
- Passports and names
- Your travel booking must match the name in your passport. If you plan to change your name, travel in the name on the passport you will be using.
- Check the season
- The time of year you marry may not be the best time for the destination you first thought of, so let the dates guide the choice.
- Tell us it is your honeymoon
- Let us know when you book, so that we can pass it on to the hotel.
- Travel insurance
- Arrange cover when you book, and check it includes any activities you are planning.
